I've never kept polys or ropefish but seeing the pics here has me thinking about getting 1 Senegal and 1 ropefish for my 125g tank once i get it set back up. I was thinking about adding an African Brown knife and wanted a school of something but didn't want Congo tetras because i've had them many times in the past. I was wondering if a group of 7 or 8 Madagascar rainbow fish would work or would they end up as snacks? (I know they aren't actually African but figured it was close enough) I was also wondering if the rainbows were a bad idea if a Paratilapia polleni might work. Or, would it be best to get maybe 2 bichir and 2 ropefish and be done with it?

Polys are fine by themselves or in a group.....usually. Ropefish prefer company of other ropefish, three or more is best. As for the rainbows it should be good as long as the sen and ropes cant fit them in their mouths.
Thanks for that info. Maybe I'll go with 1 bichir, 3 ropefish and 1 of the milder med/large cichlids
Madagascan rainbows should do just fine. Most senegal bichirs in the trade are captive bred and don't get too huge. With a milder cichlid they'll do just fine 
I currently have a group of 5 Burmese Border loaches that need to be moved to a bigger tank, do you think they would be ok with a senegal bichir and ropefish or is that a bad idea since they will all occupy the lower part of the tank?
