the other day i was fishing and i came up with a slender catfish that is over all brown with a white belly, its a varey flat fish, upper jaw over shoots the lower, adipose fin appears connected to caudal fin. sounds like a madtom but i look them up on line and there range dos not inclued minnisota. fish is 8in. any ideas what it is?

ya sonds like a stone cat with the size and connected fins.

Check for a little light-colored chevron (V) shape right at the posterior base of the dorsal fin. Also, if you get poked by the spines, stone cats have a mild venom that hurts like crazy for a few minutes. I saw a stone cat in "person" for the first time during my field ichthyology class and the first one I picked up thrashed and got be with both pectoral spines at the same time (middle and ring fingers). It hurt, but at least it didn't last long
