I have THIS UV sterilizer and a Magnum 350 to drive it. Room under in my stand is very limited. I'll post some pics tonight of my first attempt, but the result was HORRIBLE out-flow. You could barely feel it. I used a combo of pvc pipe with the Magnum 350 disconnects and vinyl tubing. I'm thinking the fact that there were too many 90 degree bends (3) and the disconnect was right up against the exhaust fitting on the magnum are attributable to the extremely low flow rate. I positioned the UV canister vertical with water flow going down it then back up to the discharge tube in my tank.

Anyone have a similar setup that works? Pics and advice would be great!

I think I'm going to scrap the PVC tonight and try vinyl hoping I can route it without kinking.

hmmm I would have thought that would give you atleast 150 gph. What kind of media is in the mag 350 ? A fine cartridge really brings the flow down if thats the case you could try the regular cartridge. Or perhaps the magnum is dirty ?

Just some baseline questions im sure you thought about.

I used an eheim 2215 for a while to power my 18 watt turbo twist. I scrapped that and got a aquaclear 50 powerhead with the pre filter. This allowed me to adjust the flow for the UV and I love it.

I've used a Magnum 350 to push water through an 18W UV light and I've used a Magnum 250 (HOT) to push water through a 9W UV... I was very pleased with both...

While 90* bends will reduce flow rate, media selection will have a much greater impact... The finer the media the more loss of flow you will have... But keep in mind low flow is desirable for UVs...

Both of you saved me an S load of headache. I've never used the micron filter before in a magnum but felt it was the best choice for a UV filter. Needless to say, I've had the magnum running without the UV filter for maybe 10 days. Hooked up the UV and noticed hardly any flow. Assumed it was my plumbing. Never in a million years would I have thought the filter would be clogged in that little time.

After reading both your responses I figured what did I have to loose? Took it apart and sure enough, the micron filter was clogged like I've been running cement through it. I covered one end with my hand and blew in the other and the pleats blew out like a balloon. Almost zilch going through them.

Threw the container in it stuffed with floss and works like a charm!

Wow. Thanks again fellas! I would've spent all day tearing it down, replumbing, and tearing it down again.

DOH!

I'd love to use the micron filter though but not if I'm going to go through 1 every 10 days. I'm guessing the small particulates from my sand are clogging it so quickly as my intakes are about an inch off the bottom.

Glad to help bro :headbang2 And yeah the micron cartridges clog pretty quick

I simjply love those micron cartridges, but they do take some time to get accustome to...

When you first start using them, they will clog up super fast. This is because you are pulling all of the finer particles out... but once you get the initial cleaning out of the way, they will last longer...

Also, there is no need to "replace" them each time, meaning throwing away the old and replacing it with brand new... When the old one gets clogged, pull it and soak it in a bleach solution. I use 1 part bleach to 5~8 parts water... Keep in mind bleach is basically concentrated liquid clorine. So when you pull the cartridge out of a bleach solution rinse it thoroughly and then rinse it in a dechlor/water mix to ensure it is 100% safe.
