I don't understand how it doesn't leak either unless that peice of glass is on a tongue/groove slide which enables it to slide and somehow seals it against leaking..

Could be a gasket ring on the stand like the O rings in a sink, Strong enough to seal with out a leak with someone pushing the glass up or down, over a short time that is, it will evently stretch and leak but I would say if thats the way it works he would check thet seal before every show.

that is why he use the cloth to try to stop water from coming out... he only open just enough for his hand to go through

Still....have you tried using a cloth that thin to stop water from flowing out?
