I just want to get this out first. Why are magnetic tank cleaners so, so, darn expensive?!? Okay, I only have glass tanks and have been using one of those long stick things with the sponge on the end but it doesn't work well I guess because there's no leverage at the end. The other day, I found a couple of large Odysea magnets in my box. Tried to use them and they barely stuck together thru the glass. I cleaned all of the contact surfaces off and tried again and the magnets would barely stick and just float off. Happened with both of them. I went to the LFS and saw that medium to large magnets were at least $50! What the heck. Are these special magnets? I'm going to my local hardware store that has industrial magnets that are also encased in plastic except the sides that contact the glass. Then I'm going to use industrial Velcro and hot glue it onto the surfaces cleaning the inside and outside. Has anyone tried this and are there any opinions? Thanks, Ed.

Good idea I had been thinking the same thing as to why they are so expensive....
Keep me posted so I can have a alternative to high priced tank ones...

I've seen youtube vids where people have done something similar to what you are planning on doing... So i guess it should work, just make sure you can actually pull them apart i would say is the only important part :p

Yes, brand name magnetic scrubbers are way too over-priced, but what makes them a joy to use is that the manufacturer has determined just the right amount of magnetic strenght for ease of use and the bouyancy rate is set just right. But, you can save significantly by straying away from lfs and chain stores with overhead to consider. Here you go:

I didn't see a glass thickness rating. My mag cleaner for 3/4" glass is powerful baby.

I actually have this one, and the magnets are powerful. Holds tight on my All-Glass 180 which I believe is at least 1/2" thickness, so 3/4" should be fine. However, I don't care much for the scrubbing material, seems too abrassive. So, I'm going to attach a dishwashing pad to it soon.
