Thanks for sharing fascinating and scary. Also could mean for migratory animals will become extinct.
I thought the same. We're soo worried about what we can see... would be ironic if this is how we go out lol

This is from a foggy memory so do not take as true. Back a decade or few I recall a discovery surrounding continental drift. In places at the ocean floor the crustal plates that the continent’s ride on are separating. Where they separate magma/lava flows up and creates new seafloor.
When rock heated to a fluid state such as magma begins to cool the ferrous minerals take a set determined by the magnetic field of the earth. Seems there are bands of seafloor rock showing many sets of reversed magnetic orientation. One take has been the earths magnetic field had flipped many times. I do not recall how often these flips are estimated to happen but I think it is something in the many tens of thousands of years ( Like 60,000 to 90,000 years.)
So this has happened many times based on that evidence. Seems then that animals and even people were around during some of these flips and survived

I read that it takes 1000-5000 years for the pole reversal to complete, but at least the Aurora will be visible further south during the reversal.
Me too. But what the articles are saying is the increase in movement will change the timeline drastically. One article said it could happen in as little as 200 yrs if it stays on the current rate.

I have a degree in geology and a few of us were talking about this in a discussion the other day. We actually have no idea what happens when the magnetic pole flips. We know it does flip and we notice that the rate of change has increased recently. Yes

is right. It has flipped multiple times. The change in magnetic fields can be correlated across spreading centres within mid Atlantic ridges. Ferrous minerals within the basalts from the mid ocean ridge cool in the direction of the magnetic fields. I’m sure all of you have seen the science experiment with a magnet placed underneath iron shavings? Same thing. Similar magnetic reversals can be seen on mars within the Southern hemisphere as well.
Yes, North becomes south. What happens during that brief instand when there is no magnetic field? How long will that last?
