magnum 350 as sump pump

i plan on doin a diy sump for my 100g and cant really afford a pump yet. i do have a magnum 350 can filter and thought since the pump is on the bottom of the filter maybe i can use this for a while if i have the sump elevated above the pumps level? or would it have to be elevated above the intake of the can?

The water level (in the sump) would have to be above the top of the canister.
