can you use a magnum 350 filter on a reef tank if you take the carbon out and put like bio balls or something else in it??? magnum 350 on saltwater?????

I have seen a sweet hang on refuge built out of a aquaclear 110. they took out all of the media and put some live sand and rubble rock in there. It got light from the hanging fixutre and was great!
