Any sugguestions on the following issue?...

I've been a fan of magnum 350 canister filters for a long time, and been using them on my tanks for years, and never had an issue till now..
Just doing some routine maintance on one of them, mt cartridge, clean hoses, and canister, replace prefilter and carbon/denitrate mix, check seals/o-rings, everything looks good. Slap it back inplace, turn it on, sounds normal..but nothing happens. motor runs, water loweres to about halfway in canister and sits there. Turn it off for a bit, maybe an airleak...couple minutes later turn it on again..nothing, same thing, water pumps down halfway and sits... I check for kinks, and leaks, and make sure all valves are open, good to go.. turn it off, take it all apart again, and double check everythign inside...good to go.. top it off, throw it on again.. nothing, still doing same thing, water down halfway and sit. There is little to no suction on the intake, but it is open and unobstructed. Any ideas?

So I thought I had it taken care of, redid everything, topped of the water level (intake is well below, but return is near surface). Voila, or so I thought. now is seems to be pumping the water the opposite direction, never switched hoses (you can't they are set male/female, so you can't screw that up) now I'm compfused...

I broke down, tore it all down for a 3rd time, put it backtogether.. now its working. nothing is different from the 1st or 2nd time. and I've been using them for years on almost all my tanks. Never had this happen, and hope it never happens again.. worried me though
