I realize that most use some sort of wet/dry sump, but I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to tackle that project yet. Until then I'm going to go with what I got. Just to start out my water parms 0/0/10-20 the day before a weakly water change. I know some will say if it aint broke don't fix it but I've been thinking about something and wanted to try it out. I use biomax for media in my canister along with the blue filter and some pot scrubies. What I'm thinking of is to put filter padding and filter floss in my intake to make my canister a bio-filtration unit only. That way I wouldn't be limited to the small media basket that comes with the Mag. I could swith to the micron cartridge and load the canister with biomax and pot scrubies. Maybe getting a longer runtime before having to clean my Mag and improving bio in my tank. What do you think?

I too am running a magnum 350 cannister. It is the only filter I have on a 72 gallon bowfront planted tank. The media basket is filled with Ehfisubstrat and cut to fit filter floss wrapper around the media basket. I have toyed with other ways to set up but I believe this is the best.

The free water space that exists aroung the media is needed for water flow. If you fill the entire canister with biomedia, the water will take the most direct and shortest path to the impeller, which means most of the biomedia would not see substancial water flow.

My water params are great, the only drawback is that I have to clean every three weeks.
