I'll be attaching a Magnum 350 with micron filter to my 180 gallon. I was also thinking of attaching a 15W UV sterlizer to the Magnum. Has anyone done this and is it effective? I think the output flow may be too strong as I've heard slower flow rates are better = greater contact time with the UV bulb.

Thanks.

wats the benefit of a UV sterilizer???

oh, is it an attachment or just light hitting the canister??? cuz i have a mag 350 and been hearing all sorts of good things u can do to these canisters to maintain a better filtration, just wanted sum info cuz they are expensive and i need to buy an new 1.

15W is kind of small for a 180. I have a 25W on my 40 gal right behind a Fluval XP2 (or XP3?) and a 57W for my 125 gal.

Instead of looking at the initial cost, consider the cost of replacement bulbs. You may find that a higher wattage bulb is only a few bucks more.

Rena makes the XP series not fluval....

YES the magnum 350 will have a far greater water flow than a UV steralizer requires.
Basicly what they are is a sealed tube with a very strong UV light that kills bacteria...ECT. in order for this to happen they need TIME for the reaction to take place. This requires a very slow flow rate. Higher wattages help a LOT less than a longer contact time in this respect.

If you are constantly adding fish to this aquarium then a UV steralizer will probubly be worth the expence of instlation and constant bulb replacement but if your tanks stable and healthy you wont notice much of a benifit in owning one...at least IME.

what are some of these good things that you heard you can do to these cans??????????????????????????????????????????

I have a 125 Gal. Tk. With a 25 watt UV hooked to my Magnum 350. In the media container I keep small size ceramic rings and on the outer part the blue sleeve that comes with the filter. This set up is working well for me. I do not have a parasite problem, but if I needed to guard for that I would need to slow down the flow rate.
I also read on this site someplace that another person filled the outer part of the filter with the bio media and used the micron filter on the inside. Sounds like a good idea, I may give it a try.
