I have a old magnum 350 laying around and i thought about putting bio media in it. I was just wondering if anyone has try this and could help me out a little.

It will work, but you may want to put a prefilter on the intake so the bioballs don't start accumulating a bunch of gunk.

I run my 350 with a sleeve on it and nothing inside the container. I find that it gets clogged quickly if I fill it with carbon or bio material. My 350 runs on a 42 gallon tank and only needs changing every month or so. When I ran carbon in it I had to service it almost weekly. The carbon container does grow bacteria nicely, I just change the sleeve and leave the container alone.

I think you will need to keep an eye on the 350 if you load it with bio balls. I think it could work but you may need to clean it out fairly often which might defeat the purpose of what you are trying to accomplish. You really don't want to ever have to clean bioballs if you rely on them for a major portion of your bio filtration. I have seen that you can hook up bio wheels to the 350, maybe that would help you out bio wise?

Hope this helps, good luck.

Bio balls are designed to best be used in a wet/dry situation this way they can expose the beneficial bacteria to both air and water. For a submerged setup you are better to go with biomax ceramic rings, matrix or ehfisubstrat.

I ran a 350 magnum for quite a while with the media chamber filled with a mix of biomax and ehfisub. The only drawback was the filter sleeve needed clean about once every 3 weeks. The water params were always good, this was on a 72gallon bowfront.

The only problem Ive had with mag 350s is if whats in the chamber is too heavy or restrictive the impeller gets ruined. So keep it light and open!
