well is it? or should i opt for some more filtration? i could through a spare 20 gallon filter on it and a sponge filter if i really need to.

For what type/how many fish?

The biowheels that come with Mag250s have a fair amount of capacity but the pump itself on a Mag250 doesn't give you much water turnover.

Oh and as an aside, I would NEVER put one filter on a tank.

This is especially true of the mag250s because they seem to clog/lose their flow rate pretty easily. Because the micron filter traps so much the flow rate can slow within a very short amount of time, so I wouldn't trust one mag250 on any tank, even a smaller one.

Mag250s are primarily useful at water polishing IMO. We have a couple with the biowheels on our tanks but they're both combined with other power filters and/or canister filters.

We did have a mag250 on a 29g for the primary source of filtration at one time, but it's now combined with a penguin because of the flowrate/clogging factor. This is also a very lightly stocked tank.

The biowheels seem to stop very easily on these filters if you don't keep them clean enough and or the catridges aren't cleaned/changed on a regular basis.

Ok, I guess in short, NO , I would not put one mag250 on a 55g.

Ok, thanks i suppose i'll order a cascade 300 hob filter and a corner sponge filter rated for 25 gallons (it'll be kep seeded in the 55 but moved to the QT when needed). then i'll move my tetra 20 power filter over aswell (or do you think that would be overkilll?)

I used a H.O.T. Mag 250 with two bio wheels (Pro 60 I think the box said) on a 55 and it worked perfectly for over 10 years with one Oscar, one Red Tail Shark and one Pictus Cat.

Thanks bud, nice to see a fellow nebraska ring in on stuff. where you from?

I'm a little South of Omaha, how about yourself?

a lil west of columbus...guess we are pretty far off still lol

It would be O.k. for 1 or 2 small fish....but it really depends on your bioload....I made that mistake a long time ago. I had about 13 small fish in my 55 with a hot magnum. They were all fine, but one night went to check on them and they were all about to die. They were not moving even if I stuck a net in there.....had to do an emergency water change and luckily I had two bigger tanks that had just got done cycling ready.

Did you have bio wheels on the exit of the HOT? If so I'm guessing they weren't cultured enough or the tank was still cycling.

If one can keep the parameters fine for the fish I listed it would have absolutely no problem with 13 small fish.
