This happened a while back and nobody was able to help me.

Ok I fixed up a magnum canister filter I had back in Feb...I got a new impeller hooked it up to my clown pleco tank. They responded extremely positively to the fast current.. I thought finally maybe my CPs will spawn for me as they have everything they need except a rapid current.

Then I left to go home as my two larger tanks are boarded and apparently there was a slow leak involved so my "brillent" father stuck the filter with big ass "DO NOT SUBMERGE INTO WATER" into a bucket. So there it was sitting in about three inches of water.
Hitting the shut off switch so I could replace a $3 leaky gasket not an option for parents.
When I came back I was alarmed, imediatly shut off the power to the entire 55 gal and took off the canister filter. I asked the company if the filter was safe to ever use again and on a forum ( maybe here I don't recall..so sorry if this is a repost). Nobody ever responded and in the meantime my best filter which I spent a lot of money on has been sitting idle. I don't want to cause a fire or electrical issue over an aquarium. I couldn't afford to replace the filter so I had to go without. I hate losing my equipment to long distance situations...It sucks.

I've had my CPs a long time and it would mean a lot to me if they would give me adorable pleco children just once..even if only one single fry survived. I really think they might if they had the fast current again. The current filter keeps them alive, but I am fairly sure they won't ever spawn unless there's a fast current again.

I'm not sure about how magnums work, but on my rena xp3 the motors and stuff are on the top of the canister. You could submerge the canister filter in about 12" of water and it wouldn't ever touch anything electrical.

i have 2 magnums and both have been completly wet,but not submerged. it sounds like yours is completly dry. correct me if im wrong but they dont have a motor per say, but a magnetic drive that spins the impellar. should be fine. I would plug it in anyway, but only if it were completly dry that is.

Thanks peoples:)....

Yes it's definatly completly dry ( since it's been sitting around for a few monthes) and won't be running unless I stay overnight at my parents this time to make sure I've caught the leak.
They do seem to have a motor running on the bottom, otherwise how would they work?.

I think if I get it going again, it will only be run during breeding attempts because if it were to leak again, it could drain most of the 55 gal out because the intake tube goes down so far in a standard 55.
It's been a good filter, used to use it for the featherfins, cichlids and my blue eyed pleco, though a bit of a pain to clean out.
