I have always wanted to try this fish. what is its availability like in the USA and Canada. Are they in the pet trade at all?

They're available in the US but you have to grab them while you can because they sell fast. Especially the ones from India.

Yes lots of people have them. Will you find them in your LFS probably never. Just keep an eye out in the MFK Market place they do appear for sale. If your looking for a specific species it may take long time to find it. But if you just like to get any Mahseer there available right now. Rapps has stracheyi for sale. You can message Fugupuff the member of the link posted above. Never know what he might be holding he might sell you.

What is their availability in Canada like?

Very poor, I've only seen them once. We have them on our stocklists, mostly Tor douronensis. Problem is no one wants them, so it's not worth ordering the usually large minimum number.
