Hi,

Since Lep. species gar are extremely rare to the LFS's in Maryland, and the only other supplier that I bought Gar from, (TFD) is now out of business, I was wondering where a good online supplier of Gar (and other ancient fishes like Bowfin) might be.

It doesn't even look like Snookin is carrying them anymore!

I'm confused.

I saw a bunch of great stuff in the vendor section here on MFK. I have had outrageous bad luck with Aquabid and did not do business with Snookin for that reason only.

When I discovered that he would do business outside of Aquabid, I contacted him (E-mail). He had some Gar, Bowfin etc. on the showcase, but when I contacted him he said they were his "son's" fish and not his!

It seems most of the non-tropical freshwater monster fish in that display add were his "Son's".

Ultimately the "end-tank" is a natural (Maryland) spring fed pond over 100' across and dredged to 15' deep.

I am definitely interested in the cooler water monster Lep. Gar species (LNG, SNG, SG & to a lesser extent FG, due to cool Temperature Acclimation challenge), as well as bowfin.

I was "embarrassed" and did not ask any questions! I did not know if He and his son were in business together and split etc. . .

Are they "back together"? If not, how do you contact the son with the awesome cooler water monsters, instead of John? Thanks!

Thank Kevin, I will try again.

That is strange that his Father would not "sell" me the "Gars" of "Bowfins" in the add.

You have to admit, the photo of the Bowfin with the Confederate Flag tank background was WAYY TOO COOL!:)

I know you mentioned to a lesser extent but House of Tropicals had some Florida's in a couple of weeks ago when I was there, not sure if they are still there. Maybe worth a call they can "usually" order stuff for you as well... just an option

other than perhaps the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard, most things with the confederate flag are stupid.

FLGs can survive in cooler climates as they have been introduced in Canada and other places in "the north".

snookn is fishing for gars and other fishes for suppliers almost full-time now, so he doesn't get to email very much at all. he deals with his own suppliers, his dad does bridge contacts for him from time to time. your best bet is to ask his dad for contact info if he is willing to share it.

reGARding this season's lack of gars...aside from the farmed gars coming in from time to time from Asia, the native season has been off this year due to wildly differing temperature patterns and delays, so there may be that effect on supply (usually we would see LNG and SNG to some extent at LFS, but i have seen none so far). likely just a bad season, so next year may be better. then again, who knows...we all know climate change isn't real...--

Catfishing last night I caught a 2' lng a 3' lng and a 4' gatorgar. I just wish I had a way to keep these monsters when I catch them. Though they do live in my backyard lake hehe.

John has branched away from his dad to have a business of his own, though they still work together. He has an alternate email that I can provide via PM, or you can just PM snookn21 and bypass the old email address.
