Not sure how to tell the difference. I picked up this chap cheap in the dreaded Assorted Cichlids tank at a local pet store. He's about 4 inches long and has an attitude. Maingano or Johanni?
If it came out of a mixed tank I would consider it a mutt. Both species are crossed alot and with not knowing the fish's history, there's no way to know if it pure, crossed between the 2, or a cross with something else that just luckily looks like a pure fish.
