"We allow native hunts for cultural purposes. However, this does not appear to be of that nature so far,"

I think thats a load of BS, its 2007, i hate how the indians in my state are allowed to spear fish, now all of the good walley fishing on my grandparents lake is ****. they also speared the largest muskie. so against their "culture"

I'm not sure where they got the .50 cal machine gun info from in the CNN report as it was a .50 cal rifle that was used from what I heard...Regardless the Makah involved, even if they had the right to whale, where out of line on this one and it is unfortunate as the animal was wasted and died for nothing...

If nothing else the animal should have been recovered and given to the Makah for tribal use rather than just let it drift off to become hagfish food. Oh well though..I seriously hope that the waste of this animal hangs over the conscience of those tribal members involved in this attempted Illegal take.

Not that I care to get in a spat here.. but Spearing by Native tribes has little effect on populations of fish managed in such a manner and you are scapegoating this rather than focusing on overfishing in general that is the real problem..

That and it happens to be customary to take the large Musky rather than smaller ones. Small fish are next years big fish and replacement is based on small fish not the big ones..Perceptions and attitudes are much different between tribal and European concepts of wildlife management. Many states should actually learn the Tribal methods and reasoning as it makes much more sense on a pure ecologic basis. It is based on sustainability and not on cropping of a game animal.

That sucks, This should not be allowed

We allow native hunts for cultural purposes :irked:

ok sure give then their "culteral hunt" but make them do it with tools from THEIR CULTURE! wooden boats and harpoons. they want to be so native and out of touch with the real world why let them use what we've invented to make life easier?

May I ask why you feel that hunts for a particular species should not be allowed for cultural purpose or reason?[/QUOTE

Well, I have alot of Scottish and Irish in Me. So cultural reasons I should be allowed to go kill my neighbors goat for food or cultural purposes. My old family came from the famine in Ireland, They killed goats for meat, and ate alot of potatoes. But now We can go to the store and purchase items we need. Whales do not need to be killed for cultural purpose. Now if that was to survive on, OK.

You do understand certain cultures have used particular animals as part of their heritage long before European colonization right? These animals are part of their heritage and are part of them. in many cases it is a part of their identity as a group. You can not place your morals and values on these people as you are very outside of this culture. I'm not acting as an apologist in this case as these particular tribal members where in the wrong in this take..But you can not judge a group just because their customs differ from yours..There is nothing wrong IMHO with any Makah whaling in any way they wish..This is their right.

I personally am 1/3 creek as well as a Serb from the former RSK and Serbian city of Vukovar..Call me sensitive but I very well understand people passing their cultures on me and trying to make me submit to them. I can get very well pissed on more than one front with cultural ignorance and have reason to resist and fight back when I hear those telling anyone to follow "my culture" and to Be "like me". IMO no one here has a right to pass judgment on the Makah for their cultural practice of whaling..You can criticize and say they suck in this instance but you have no right to say they do not have the right to practice what they have for thousands of years.

this has nothing to do with the tribe as a whole. this has to do with a few morons who went out in a boat and killed a whale without the consent from the government or the tribe council.
