Could I make my own HOB filter? I was thinking I could use two intake U tubes at a size to get me the right GPH, probably 500-60gph, then built my own overflow box out of acrylic. I could then add whatever media I wanted. Would this be cheap or too expensive in the long run?

If you're doing it purely to save money, the AquaClear 500 runs between $90 - $120 and comes with money and is rated at 500gph.

I'm not an expert on pumps, but I would guess a quality one, plus the acrylic, acrylic bonding agent, pipes & fittings, then filter media, you're probably going to be getting close to $90.

Err, comes with media, not money :).

I was going to run out and buy all the AC 500s I could find! lol

OP, DIY is always fun and educational...but, from a purely cost point, you can buy used HOBs anywhere from $15-$50. Even new one's are fairly inexpensive. But...if you're doing it from the "why not?" point of view, go for it :)

Get AC 110
There is not really point of building one , as HOBs these days are in good price range ;)

Back when they were the AC500, i remember being able to get them for like $35 from big als and that pet place. Why did they go up so much? You could even get them at the LFS for like $70-$75.

I have seen them at Amazon for less than $70. Petsmart will lower the price to the low $70s when they are on sale. You can buy them used even here on MFK for half that price. The best part is, I have two and I haven't had to buy media for a long time. They may be pricey at first, but their reputation is unsurpassed and the long term expense is minimal.

Great filter all the way around :)

just go to petsmart and buy the best HOB available, its called aquaclear 110, the media pocket is huge for HOB and u can pretty much customize any media u want to fill it with, none of those cartridge style that need to be replace every hour LOL
if u talking about sump-pum i agree DIY will be alot cheaper
