I recently painted my tank background black and it made the blue Aquaclear intakes way more noticeable. I was going to paint them with Krylon but didn't really want to take my ac110 and 70 offline for a few days.
So I started looking around the house and realized shop vac 1.5" extension tubes fit perfectly over the AC intakes. The tapered sides give a snug enough fit that I can drain to the bottom without losing suction. It also extends the intake around 6" longer.
My shop vac came with 3 so I used 1 for each intake and still have 1 to vacuum with lol. If you don't have a shop vac the extensions are only $8 at the hardware store, about the same price as a stock Aquaclear extension shipped.
Here's a few pics, I hid them with fake plants and put sponges on the ends so sand doesn't get sucked up since they're a few inches above the substrate.
