Ok, so I have a 55g tank that is stocked "well."

On it I have an Aqueon 55, and a Cascade 200 - both are HOB.

I have been considering adding some media to the Aqueon 55, because there is actually quite a bit of room in there, but it only has two slots for the carbon inserts it came with. I was thinking about adding something behind the carbon filter pads (so the water would past through the pads last), but am not sure what to use.

I have read that cutting up plastic straws can be used for media, and isn't really that bad for what it is. Could I cut up a bunch of straws and put them in something? What?

What are some other things I could use in my Aqueon for some DIY media?

Yeah, I just want more surface area for the BB... Extra clarity wouldn't be a bad thing, but I don't expect that with straws.

I have a barebottom tank.

Pot scrubbies are handy for this. You can usually find a package of 4 or 6 for a buck.

You are all forgetting that all these things could release nasty chemicals into your fishes water, this could result in a few deaths. ;)

In your own words

In the event, if there is a possibility
you feel as if I am talking down to you.

:grinno: Well, then you probably need to grow up

Exactly what chemicals are going to leach out of the nylon? You may want to do a little research on the subject:ROFL: the scrubbies are basically made out of the same material as bio balls. :screwy:I would bet that half the experienced members here on MFK use pot scrubbies.

And what's with the double post, you don't know how to edit yet:grinno:

im not sure if plastic straws would make a very efficient breeding ground for BB.

what i do is take my favorite bio media and put it in nylon pantyhose. just tie it up and leave a little wiggle room to slide it into ur HOB.

Pot scrubbies, shotgun wads(new of course), bulk filter floss, pieces of wiring loom, straws. It will all work. all you are after is surface area for the BB to attach too

My choice would be some ceramic biomax for a AC110 HOB. it comes with a mesh pouch and a clip so you can put in just the right amount, and its only about 11 bucks.

this is in my ac70 and it is great
the other thing i would do use beads and put them in a large container with some rough rocks and shake it up so they get all rough and put it in nylon pantyhose or a media bag from a lfs or online
