Smaller substrates are much better for loaches. They like to pick through the substrate for food, and a finer substrate causes lees irritation and damage to their barbels. I just switched my main tank to Caribsea's Torpedo Beach sand.

nice pic wurm

Substrate that are rounded and smooth should be used for loaches and other bottom dwellers. It doesn't really have to be fine like sand unless you have loaches that like to bury themselves like kuhlis.

that is a nice loach. and great pic.

That's true, a rounded substrate is better. I think sand is preferable, and the finer the better. I have to think in their native habitat they live in a combination of sand/mud.

my loach has play sand should b fine right?

Looks good!

I have been thinking about switching the 180 over to a sand substrate, but the thought of having to change it out just scares me.

I just put the sand over the top of mine, but you may have a gravel bed that is too deep for that.
