making a pond in summer 2010!

hey all mfk members! me and my dad are going to build a pond in our back yard. its going to be about 5000-6000 gallons. its going to be a utdoor pond but i would like to keep tropical fish in there too besides only koi. i live in california and in the summer it gets hot. would it be okay to put tropical fish in the pond for the summer and then take them inside for the winter? plus i would like to have a pond heater can anyone tell me where to get one? website, store, etc.....

it will be fine just make sure the fish get along well cuz koi can get their fins nipped off by nippy trops

Also, if you plan on bringing them inside, keep in mind that you'll need a pond or big tank inside to hold them... depending on what size they are, that might be a hassle.

our family has a 3000 gallon pond out side and we also tried to do this with some tropical fish and about 30 koi. The hardest part if being able to net them to bring inside and also if the tank inside is large enough.

We place a pleco into the 3000 outdoor pond and within the three months, it was about 1 and a half foot long. We were not able to net it and it died because of the cold. We just stick to koi and a couple humongous goldfish(7 inch +)

At 5-6K and assuming it will be 3-4 feet deep, the summer temps. shouldn't be a problem. It's going to be heating it in fall/winter. A solar DIY unit will be budget friendly, but a gas boiler will insure the tropicals will survive and grow w/o the need to house them in a 1000+gal. indoor tank. Koi, goldfish and natives will do just fine w/o any heater.
