This thing is kinda loud. I trimmed a bit off the plastic thing that sucks in the water but its still kinda loud. I also raised the water level, so that the water barely has anything to fall off into.

Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem. I had 2 Whisper 60s on my 50 gallon in my room. I tried each one by itself to make sure it wasn't just a bad unit, they were both loud. No solution though, just got used to it and had other sources of noise in the room such as the table fan and computer fans.

It's funny that these carry the "Whisper" name but all of their filters up to and including the Whisper 40 are indeed whisper quiet.

I believe it's the motor.

Buy an Aqua Clear.

Actually, I got an Eheim 2217 in their place :), but if it's not a very heavy load I would recommend the Rena xP3 instead.

jdelator, how big is the tank?

like know said, get an aquaclear.
it uses a different impeller type to suck the water in, it is virtualy silent if you raise the water leval, the whisper uses an impeller attached to the inlet tube, it causes friction in the motor housing.
the aquaclears motor has a built in impeller attached directly to its shaft.

It's a 55 gallon, although at this point I feel like I wasted money into this. Next time I'll get something other than a whisper for a power filter. The whisper filters products are fine though.
