I recently acquired a 125 gal tank. I also inherited a 3-4" gold saum (male I think). I have been looking around the forum and on different sites to find tank mates for him that are compatible and that my husband likes. He liked the gold saum and this is the first he has shown any interest in my tanks.

This is what I have come up with so far. Salvini, Convict, Blue Acara, Firemouth, Paratheraps Zonatus (sp??).

Questions

1. Can I add one of each of these?
2. Are they all compatible?
3. What size do I get so the Saum doesn't bully/kill them?
4. Is the tank stocked with what I have chosen or is there more room?
5. If there is room, what other choices? Cichlids or dithers?

Thanks for your help.

1. Sounds like a good mix of fish. Try to get all males so none of them pair up.

2. The only real problem I see is the GT might pick on the Acara quite a bit.

3. Most likely you won't have a problem with different sizes. Just set the tank up with separate territories and boundries.

4. I think the tank is stocked sufficiently but other people will probably tell you differently. You can probably add more but I'm not into grossly overstocked tanks personally.

5. Imo, maybe a catfish or bristlesnose pleco....or both. And maybe some smaller growing silver dollars.

Thanks for your answers. Would a JD work better than an Acara?

It would but I would recommend getting a JD that is bigger than the saum. you don't need an acara anyways. They look real close to saums.

Anything other than another Aequidens species would work out better imo.

+1

Any of the other fish you mention is a great choice.

I think that GT would be a great show piece fish and then add like 6-8 Silver Dollars and 6-8 Clown Loaches. You would have non stop action in the tank with lost of movement and color.

I applaud you for not wanting to overstock, that is a huge pet peeve of mine.

Would 6-8 silver dollars be ok? or more or less? What kind of cat fish?

You answered me already1 Thanks

I didn't think about loaches. I don't much care for the clowns. Any other kind?

5-6 spotted silver dollars should be fine...they only get 5". Don't get Red Hooks, they grow the size of a dinner plate.
