So I have this pair of parachromis dovii that have been spawning like mad, and it's got me thinking (always leads to trouble when that happens)... Do any of you actually make money off of an at-home fish breeding endeavor? I really like the idea of breeding fish, cichlids or otherwise, and selling them to local fish stores and maybe a few online. I just don't know anyone who really does it. I was hoping some of my fellow mfk-ers could share some experiences and/or advice. As a side-note about me, I've been keeping fish (mostly sa/ca cichlids) for 13 years, and am not opposed to adding a few more grow-out tanks, but I have a small house, so I can't do a huge fish-farm. I'm not looking for a primary income, just a supplement to my hobby, and maybe a few extra bucks if possible. Thanks in advance!

Hard to actually make money unless your a full size farm. If you can get fry without going out of your way to do it, and LFS's have a demand for that you can most likely get store credit, in which case go for it!

But if it ends up being something you have to put money and a whole lot of time into to make work, then dont waste it. More likely than not you will just end up tired of having to keep up.

i dont think dovii would be the best idea if you want $$. alot of ppl are scared away from them because of there adult size. but otherwise its not a bad idea.

Money?yes.
Profit? no.

I guess if I dont count electricity I make more than I spend on the hobby. If I worked harder at it I could be making a few bucks at it.But then it would be more of a side job than a hobby.

Try growing a few out if you got an extra tank.Shop them local. Here and aquabid if you want to try your hand at shipping.

you'll never make alot untill you turn it into your job and lfs's don't buy fish (atleast ones near me) they only take 'em for free

I wasn't necessarily talking about breeding dovii. that is just my inspiration. I have gotten some credit or cash from every fish I have ever taken in to a lfs. I guess I am lucky in that respect. Nomad, I'll check out the rays. They are tight anyway! I am also planning on talking to a friend/acquaintance who owns a llfs and see if there is anything in particular he is interested in. Thanks for the input guys!

Watch for species that are similar to those being bred in the hobby but have not yet been successfully bred. If you crack the code and can supply the hobby with a trend fish you're raising yourself, you've got a market.
