That's one lesson I'm learning right now. I got a new tank from my sister for xmas and got it set up this last weekend. It's small by comparison to tanks on this site, but I'm still a newbie fish keeper.

My pleco and 4 rainbow fish were in a 10g tank. And it was damn near impossible to keep up with it because it was way too small of a tank. The tank I now have them in is 30g. Which, I'm seeing may still be too small, but at least they have SOME room to move around. I'm hoping that they dont outgrow it for at least 6-8 months so I can get them a bigger tank!

But throughout this entire process, and watching them acclimate to the new tank, I'm seeing all of them be much more active, and much more colorful! My pleco was so stressed out in the old tank that he was pretty much entirely black (not totally sure if from stress or from water conditions). Now he's looking like he should, and is far more active! My rainbowfish, I think they've been watching some nascar because they'll start circling around the tank.

If they were sentient I would apologize for having them in the 10g for WAY too long (i got the pleco when he was about 1.5", he's around 7-8" now).

I had posted my new setup on one of the car forums I frequent (yea, what's with me never being able to find an inexpensive hobby, cars, radios, fish, dogs, guns, etc). Anyway, one of the other members there gave me the link to this site. Reading through here really has me interested in getting a much larger tank (i'm thinking 150-200 for the living room) late next year. I figure it will take me that long to do it right! I really want to see how big Mr. Bohemoth (my name for my pleco) can get!

Things I've learned just in the past week:

My tank was way too small and overstocked!
My tank is still too small, but fish are small enough to where it will suffice for a little while.
My fish need more variety of food, at least the pleco! I'm starting to experiment with things to see what he'll eat/like.
Spending more time on the tank = more stress relief & happiness for me!
One of the girls at the fish department in my local petsmart is really cute, too bad she has a ring :(

Things I'm going to be doing in the near future:
Redoing my 10g, this time with just 1 fish, and some live plants. I'm still researching what fish to put in it, I want something that will not outgrow the 10g.
Saving up for a much larger tank. I'm thinking 150-250 range. Something nice to put in the living room after it gets redecorated (have a really great spot for it, 14' short wall)

That's it for now :)

A planted cherry shrimp 10 gallon is nice (I have one!) Or you could do some corycats. I love corycats, ~6 of a species that stays small would be a GREAT little display tank!
