so I was thinking of making my own filter using this design
but filling it with something like crused lava rock or something like that and not sand what do you guys think is it a good idea or a bad idea?

use army men or bio balls. have you tried a algea filter. pm me if you have any qs on the algea filter
it would just be a small bio filter i would recomend a sponge pre-filter on it so it wouldnt clog up with junk fast it would also make maintanence a breeze.....and is it all glued together or is there a screw off cap to change media?????? it seems to me that i would be nicer to have acces to the inside
I use a few of these type filters. I call them "flushers" because once the are glued the only way to clean them is to flush them out. I use 1.5" intake/output and a 6" main body. You can make one of these in about 30 minutes for less than $20 (not including the pump).
