I'm talking about midas/RD probably. If I wanted a beefy male (someday) would my best bet be to buy a few small ones and keep the best? I dunno if the LFS in my area would take in RD/midas for adoption. :( What do you guys think?

Unless you find an adult, yeah that's about your only option. If your lfs won't take back the others.....they suck. :D Seriously, they should.

I would definitely recommend buying several and growing them out. It's very rewarding to raise a fish yourself but I've bought three individual Midas over the past year, grown them out individually, and all three have turned out female! :-( I would have saved a lot of time by buying more than one and growing all out together.

Is the fish biz pretty popular in your area? If so, you may be able to sell the others via Craigslist or right here on MFK.

There are a bunch of MFKers in the Denver area, but none near me. :( And no, the fish biz is kinda lame in my town. Thus, the lame LFS. M best bet for a RD/midas is Petsmart. And ours is poor to mediocre.

people on craigslist constantly flag fish sales in my area, i dont know about other locations, but yeah.. might be unsuccessful...
