Okay so I have two syno's in a 75 or so gal tank with just one tetra and a bristlenose plec. They are pretty big the largest is around 10". The problem I have is that despite being the only fish in the tank, they use none of it and prefer to stay hidden under a log all the time. Does anyone have any tips for getting them to be more active, and will dither fish help at all? I know most cats just like to hide but I have seen other people with similar fish which are out all the time.

Thanks.

i have one myself and it's the total opposite, it very active mine only thing i could possibly suggest to you would be to get more movement in the water add a power head to it this will also add extra oxygen into the water and may help the fish become much more active for you.

It's interesting that you should say that I will definitely increase the surface agitation because the feed from my filter doesn't really cause much the way it is now. Thanks Dan! Btw, does anyone have an opinion on dither fish for synos?

Not sure if dithers will help with catfish.....

As far as trying to make them more active, try removing some hiding spots. You can also start feeding them during the day so they get use to coming out when your awake. My bet is that, right now they are pretty active at night.

add a power head or get a bigger tank and more catfish

Thanks I increased the surface agitation yday by aiming the filter output upwards and making it closer to the surface. I actually saw the big one cruising around, but when I walked into the room and he saw me he hid again. The problem with removing hides is that the tank is fairly heavily planted, and when I take away the wood they hid behind the plants.
