Basically for the last few years I have been able to use well water for my fish hobby which has been grate for the fish and not ing to remove chlorine from the water changes. Obviously this only encouraged my hobby....

Now I'm about to move house to some where that will be on a mains system. Now I don't talky want to have to by tap safe for 200gallons a week as this will be costly.

Would a HMA or hose pipe filter work for making mains water bacteria friendly?

Any advice appreciated

I wouldn't worry about an HMA or pipe filter. Just use prime or safe made be Seachem to remove any chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. I would says about 80% of us on main systems do that without any issue.

I change the same amount of water as you per week. A $12 bottle of Seachem prime will last about 6 months, while a $24 container of Safe will last 5 years and does the same thing as Prime but in a concentrated powder. If your tap isn't treated with chloramine you can remove chlorine with straight sodium thiosulfate for even cheaper, but prime/safe has the added benefits of removing ammonia and detoxifying nitrites and nitrates
