Also, some movement of the surface of the water will aid in dispersion of any surface film that may form on the water. It also helps provide a good exchange of oxygen (from the water or live plants) and the CO2 (from fish or live plants).
Many fish, especially plecos, need high flow to breed. My gold nugget lived on a piece of wood right in front of the Fluval output and I found it in thw waterfall part of a HOB once.
I have only found a pleco do this once, but I have had loaches and eels do it (and go through the return pipes from tank to tank at the shop I was running).
