I am thinking about making my own soft plastic baits to fish with. Any one else done this?

i thought about it. started browsing jans netcraft website. you can find anything there

i pour my own jig heads, egg sinkers, spinner baits, buzz baits.

And my dad and I build custom rods.

We tried pouring worms and grubs a few times but as cheap as they are at wally world it just wasn't worth the trouble to us.

Yeah I already make walking sinkers and jig heads. But I am thinking about making some walleye grubs. like 4" curl tails. I would just buy them but you can find glow in the dark ones in more then 1 color where as If i make my own I can make several glow in the dark colors.

Agreed some of those molds for plastics can be expensive. I too also thought of doing this once. Here are a couple of websites to check out if you are interested.

I also make my own jig heads and spinner baits by melting lead. But got all the stuff for free from my grandpa and enjoy doing it. It is fun catching fish on stuff you make. Makes you feel proud. If you decide to go through with making your own plastics I would suggest maybe going to craigslist or eBay to find stuff cheap first. Also if you make stuff I would love to see how it turns out. Hope this helps.

thos are some good sites but I was looking at starting small. Janns netcraft has some good starter stuff before I would take a leap to the metal molds for more mass production.

gummy worms are a very cheap, yummy alternative to some worms. they surprisingly work well too

There's this bloke who used to do shows on tv, he would make lures out of old plastic bags, and any old junk he had lying around. He showed you how to do it for a survival situation. But they worked. Look up malcolm douglus, I dunno if he's got a website, but it's worth a try.

it depends what you are fishing for, but an old tiny metal spoon bent over itself in half and with a carefully placed hook can be a decent lure too.

Me and dad use to make our own mold out of BONDO from a auto body store.

You just mix up some pink bondo per instructions and put the bondo in a rectangular plastic box like a old hook box or storage case that is as long as you want the bait to be.

And fill it up to the edge then take a store bought plastic that you want to replicate and lay it on the bondo and press it in evenly working from one end to the other. Once the bondo has set up you can remove the plastic bait with a tooth pic or anything to pick it out of the mold. And let the bondo mold cure for a day or so. And you are all set for replacating your favorite soft plastic.

I have never worn out a bondo mold with plastic. And if you make a bondo mold for lead it will last about 250-500 pours.

You can get longer life out of them by dipping them in water to cool the plastic or lead quicker.

You can make a replica mold for any bait you want for just a few bucks.
