Thought this was really cool, as I go to scotland now and again, and would love to see them, got to work out where it is though lol

An oil rig worker has filmed a "killer" Mako shark 200 miles off the Aberdeen coast.

Lance Baldwin, from Keith, who is a rig safety worker, filmed the predatory shark with a remote-controlled underwater video camera, says Aberdeen's Evening Express.

A shark expert at Aberdeen University identified the shark as a Mako, and says the footage provides the first evidence that the species is living off the coast of Scotland.

Fishermen have made a number of sightings of Mako sharks over the years, but until now, there was no real evidence that the species really existed there.

"The shark must have been about eight to 10ft long, with a white underbelly," Baldwin told The Evening Express.

"The scary thing is there was a team of divers working around the rig on maintenance the other day. I wouldn't want to be one of them now.

"The first we knew was when we saw something flash across our monitors just before 11am on Saturday. "Scott and I just looked at each other and mouthed: "Oh, my God - it's Jaws."

Have they posted any of the initial videos yet? Sounds alot more convincing than the old "Great White" story posted.

lol only slightly. I am trying to find the vids, I'll post them up if I find them before anyone else.

Agreed - does sound more like the old "Great White in the UK" story.

Generally makos are found in warmer waters. I'm thinking may the shark was misindentified as a Mako. But sounds more like a Salmon shark, since they are found in the North Atlantic and are a Mackeral Shark like the mako .

To me... Makos, have ALWAYS looked like CLOSE relatives to The porkers.... I can see mis identifying... ZooDiver, wha do you think?????

I'd love to see video. Mako is a warmer water species, but then again, whites move warm to temperate as well.... could be a rare case of one being out of it's known range, could be a wrong ID.

To me... the teeth ar clearly different... more fish oriented.... but the body, and coloring are almost the same.. Like I wuld think that it was a juvi GW... you know, until it was WAY more persistant and curious... Iwuld be in trouble.
