Malawi Cichlid lighting help... growing algae.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree about turning on the lights for long periods and locating your tank near a window that gets lots of natural light (afternoon light) if you are wanting to provide algea for your cichlids. Be prepared though, you will have to wipe the front of the glass often.

Cichlidgirl, thanks for the advice... already doing most of that... do you have a favorite type of buld....?

I'm a little confused - Micro and Macro algaes are benifical w/ Africans the best way to cultivate is the use of a refrigium or vegatable filter. You descibed what sounds like Hair Alage cultivares, best way to grow that is thru indirect sunlight and grow lamps using large broadleaf plants like brazilian spears however the africans will probably eat the spear long before it develops. Direct sunlight, organic build up, insufficent current, and a build up of CO2 will cause noxious algae like Brown or Green slime algaes that are more unsightly than benificial, these grow aggressively on the glass - Why would you want the Noxious Varients? Or maybe I mis-interpruted your thread? If your lookiin' for the Hair Algae look - I'd check into espaliating Christmas Moss to the back tank wall.
