Did I hear that this was approved. Tanzania sold rights to Russia to drill oil in the lake? Tanzania and Malawi were in disagreement over who owns the lake. Tanz used the oil money to buy weapons??? can anyone clarify???

It would be a massive shame.

Best as I can tell it has not yet begun (it's still in the environmental assessment phase) but a single oil spill could permanently destroy one of Earth's great and unique places.

Wow that is sad. I had never heard of this until seeing your post OP. I read some news articles and it just looks bad. So many people get hopeful about these things thinking they will bring peace and prosperity, but when you have arguing and assumptions being made - Tanzania - it usually just leads to the worst results. As a fishkeeper, and of malawi cichlids, I obviously don't want the lake polluted and destroyed, but more importantly I fear this will result in bloodshed. Just to much money involved.

I hope this isn't true, Russians don't exactly have the best environmental record where oil and gas are concerned. I worked service rigs in Canada and the guys i worked with would work in Russia to repair oil wells. They said there were still open ditches to move oil from the wells to the refinery. I don't know if this is still the case, but imagine what carelessness would be considered OK in a third world country where there is no regulation or penalty.
