I recently redid my 55 Gallon Malawi mbuna tank to be a semi - biotope. I was just wondering if there were any top - water species native to lake malawi that would be compatible with my mbuna. Also, the tank is only 55 gallons, so i do not want a 2' monster, lol. Any suggestions?

None really. I don't really know of very many top dwelling fish that are located in huge bodies of waters... There just doesn't tend to be the plants and such for them to hide under. (And if you look at Malawi, while there are some places with large plant growth near the shore, most of it is just rocks and water.)

Note I am not saying Malawis wont occupy the surface, they do live in shallow waters. (OB genes are what help them survive near the shore.)

Huh open water preditors = 55 gallon tank? And I am fairly certain most of these are located in deep waters.... Not a surface fish for a 55 gallon tank.

There is a dwarf one from one of the satellite lakes off Malawi, and can get to the size of 4.1 inches. Rhamphochromis sp. "Chilingali" Not sure how well it would do, or availability.

Okay, thanks guys. I looked up Rhamphochromis sp. "Chilingali", and while they look like cool fish, they seem to be extremely expensive ($70 - 80). What i had in mind was something like the tanganyikan killifish, except from lake malawi. For now, i may just stick with mbuna, and see what happens. The main reason for me asking is that i recently redid my tank, with a bit shorter rockwork, and the top seems kind of empty. I am going for a biotope tank (well, at least all fish from lake malawi), and was just curious as to whats out there.

Thanks though :)

well you could do acei. Acei don't neccesarily swim at the top of the tank but they swim and occupy the higher end of the tank. Besides that nothing really.
