Ok I am planning on making my 55g into a Malawi tank and was wondering what kind of sand I should use and how easy of maintenance is it? Will the sand clog filters? That is my biggest concern, since I am always using gravel in my tanks. Any advice would be a huge help.

They love to dig. When I had mine, they had a new landscape every day (play sand). Which ever sand you choose, rinse it well and then rinse it some more. The water should remain clear after you stir the sand with your hand (no one ever has the patients for this but your fish are going to be stirring it up).

Sand is murder on pumps. The inlet needs to be as high as possible. The first time you get sand in the pump will be when you start complaining of it rattling.

It depends on what you ph is from the tap! If its low you will want to use a substance or mix a substance with sand to get the desired ph.

You could always just get Pool Filter Sand. I like it because it is heavier. Just keep you intake up a few inches and you should be fine.

Ok thank you, I think the owner of the lfs will have some of the right stuff, and he gives me deals so we shall see where I end up.
