ive had trumpet snails for a while. i recently found one that looks a lot different. it has spike on its shell instead of it all being smooth. is this some kind of new mutation?

No. They're simply different species. There are dozens of species of MTS but a lot of us don't usually bother identifying them since it tends to be rather tricky. Same can be said with physas and planorbids.
