I was went to petland today to stock up on fish food and noticed they had 1" - 4" convicts for $2. I have always wanted to get some so I tried to get a male and female. I know they are not the mest pics, so I hope they are good enough. If not Ill try to get more later.

Im pretty sure the first is a male. The second, I got a look on the belly and thought I was seeing orange, but Ive never done it so Im not sure if I was looking at it correctly. Any thoughts?

My absolute guess would be that i'm seeing two males in the pictures. With pronounced head humps.

Also, from the pictures only, they seem to be mixed with something along the way, as the pointed snouts are not a sign of "pure" convict cichlids.

Having said all that, if there is a lot of orange in the second pic, that is the most "male" looking female i've ever seen. Again, unless the pictures are stretched in some way.

don't look like full convicts but i can't see the belly well enough on the second one, if there's color on it, you'll know. there's no doubt about it. when they're stressed or spooked they lose that color on their belly though but it's temp. i've been in pet stores trying to get a male and female in a tank full of them and as soon as the net hits the water, we can't tell who's who

I def. see the firemouth look in them. I have them in my q tank now. Ill see how the progress. They are staying together and swimming almost like a schooling fish, but they have only been in there for an hour or so.

These guys going to grow up to be ugly's? haha

They are about 4" now, so I guess they are pretty much there now. Myabe Ill head back and try again for a female, as long as they breed fast like full convicts.

These are not the best looking convict cichlids I have seen on MFK.....The body shape is not solid convict.............I would say both are male........Female COnvict cichlids have bright redish-orange blotches on their bellies, hard to miss...........If you have to think twice about the female, you most likely have a male.............

I wish that were true. I have a female that's so male, it's not funny, but just because she's got some silly orange, she's automatically female. Nevermind the male "look", NICE trailers, and overinflated ego... (She's never laid eggs, tho, and I've had her for 5 months.)
