i just got a 6-7" male dovii, and the lfs where i got the male has a female about the same size. do males and females typically pair up easily, or will adding the female be a possible problem?

We must provide the tank size with questio's such as these.

Providing the tank is large enough, setup a divider and allow them to get used to one and other. Or provide them with some targets. Most of the larger C/A's will become aggressive to the weaker of the pair if they are not ready to spawn, so a divider would be the best option.

Well for a proper tank for growing out Dovii 150+ until I assume you get some thing along the lines of a 210-240. They should spawn relatively easy. If the male begins to mouth her by grabbing her by the gill plates or mouthing her face but not hard to where her slime coat is damaged then he wants to spawn. Also what you'll notice is the male and female will clean off a rock. One that is usually higher than all the rest and has a pocket behind it. The male will begin sort of showing off to the female usually tail slapping the water. It looks like he is swimming really hard but not moving. And once in a while the male will go over to there clean rock and shutter over it almost like practice runs for the real thing. Ofcourse the female's belly will get real fat and thats the sign that you definately have fry in the future. The reason for the pocket behind the rock is that once the fry become wrigglers then the female or the male will begin dumping them behind it. Like a little canyon for them to grow in. They will become fre swimming within a few days and this the most exciting part and DO NOT MISS IT. What you will see is like a little or big ball of black and grey fry that try to start swimming but eventually just fall back to the ball lol. It usually takes about 2 hours for the majority to start swimming and IMO the most rewarding part.

Don't add another female or other fish at this time it will be hell. I mean I have a 19" pleco that lives with my Jag pair and he is the only fish they allow in there. Pleco is somewhat well behaved though.

I say pick her up and try it out! I've been on the market for a male and can't wait to hopefully get them to bond. I have pair of RT Motas and like Cross127 said..... it's pretty neat watching your hard work pay off when they spawn!
