Hey guys n' gals I got a new male trimac yesterday and he is still being pretty shy but is starting to settle in. He had a female mate that they were selling as a pair but I told them I didnt couldnt house both of them as I only have a 90g for him atm. He is about 7-8" and she looked to be about 5". Would they be ok together in a 90 or is that asking for domestic violence COPS style? Also if this is too small of a tank, how big of a tank would I need for them to live together without killing each other?

For a pair you will need a larger tank, female needs a retreat from the male , eggcrate deviders work well but in a 90gal that doesn't leave much space.

yea....I was afraid of that, I will have a 6 foot tank up and running by the first weekend in march but between now and then I have no way to keep them from seriously hurting or killing each other. :(

How big of a tank would I need to safely house the 2? would a 6' 125 be suitable?

If they were a bonded pair already, and you are for sure going to have the 125 set up, Id get the female, put an eggcrate divider with a hole big enough for her to fit through in there and get her. Also, a 90 is the same dimensions a a 125 depth and height wise, so you could use the same divider in your 125.

If they were not already a bonded pair, I dont know if Id risk trying to do the divider thing in a 90. Give the guy the money and have him hold the female for you until your 125 is setup and try it in there.

Good Luck! Trimacs have had more personality than any other fish Ive owned and are one of my personal favorites. They can be very unforgiving of tankmates though, so make sure the divider is well secured.

Well i went and got her, they were allredy a bonded pair. He said they were never violent with each other aside from some occasional lip locking. So I brought her home and WOW he brightened up and started dancing immidiately. She keeps going from normal colors to VERY dark, almost black. So far so good, no violence at all just lots of sand moving. But I'm keeping a close eye on them to be sure. I got a pot that she can use to take refuge and if need be I will put it in there. Pic's are going up in the media lounge in just a min.
