Last night I received a beautiful and very pregnant marigold platy. She took to my tank very well and already has admirers (Tis the season, right?). Well, this morning I notice that my very preggers blue MM hid, and bam, another batch of what looks like 7+ fry. Not even a half an hour later, I find that my male Betta has given up flirting with th female Betta and is doing guard duty for the fry! They're tucked away in some pothos leaves clustered near the surface and there he is, sidled up next to them draping his fins over them! If any fish (except for the 1 month old fry from the same female) comes anywhere near those leaves, he chases them away and resumes his post!

I thought male bettas wanted to EAT the fry. =\

Is he "fond" of the blue fry because they're a similar color to his female and he thinks they're his?

Will he act the same to the upcoming marigold fry?

Can someone please explain this very protective, odd, and amusing behavior?
Any help is greatly appreciated :)
