In my teen tank with the half grown fish, 80% of the fish are female. There are three males total, two senegals that are about 1 year old at 7-8'', and a larger palmas polli 8''. It's taken a year for me to get the senegals that large, but the larger polli has doubled in size and length in two months. I don't know if the three big boys are going thru puberty or what, but their behaviors have drastically changed.
A few weeks ago, the polli was the king of the bottom of the tank, cruising around acting normal. The senegals were their usual crazy selves, up and down and active and happy. A few days ago the senegals started flexing their anal fins and doing little displays to no one in particular. I watched for hours last night and all of that has changed. One of the senegals isn't as active, and hangs out at the bottom resting. The polli has started his displays as well, and he and the senegal are all over the tank flexing and doing all sorts of weird looking stuff with that fin. Is it puberty?? Are they all confused and disputing the new Weeksii females?? Territorial? I've never seen my bichirs do this stuff... not even the adults. There aren't any female senegals in the tank for them to be fighting over - there is a smaller polli but it's still a bit young to know if it's male or female yet. Any thoughts??
