how many of a certain species should i look at getting to hopefully end up with a mf pair that arent gonna just slaughter each other. i would hate to buy 4-5 fish and end up with all one sex. any idea on how many to get to get at least one of each sex or is it just a crap shoot.

I would say at least 3. I've had pretty good luck with this number. I've ended up with pairs of lents and acutirostris by purchasing just 3 specimens. Obviously the more you get the better your chances of picking up not only a pair but a pair that like each other.

I know that if it was me , and I bought 3 looking for a pair, they would all end up being the same sex. Thats just my luck with pairing.

Agree with above, 3 at the minimum.
Hey Salty when you said that they had lents at shark aquarium, did you talk to someone?

BadDogsPa,
When choosing Crencichla or buying from online, unless they have reached there mature coloring, you do not know which is female or male especially Lugubris. You may not know male or female until they reach 8-9 inches.
Therefore when buying @ 3 or 4 inches you purchase at least 3 or more in hopes you end up with at least 1 male and 1 female that are compatible.

no i e mailed him after i saw his pike list on another board *********** if you can say that he had quite a few including marms

he cut a heck of a deal but unfortunately im gonna have to pass between money and this being my busy season where i cant always be home i shall wait. 5 lents shipped to my door for less than 300 was very tempting though. that said if anyone just wants to hook a brotha up and keep them til mid july im just sayin :D :D :D

I wish i could slap you through the computer screen!!! :irked: :nilly: You passed up a chance to get FIVE lents for less than $300? I guess I'm not gettin through to you guys or something...haha. Oh well, not like your wife could learn how to feed them or anything...;)

If you are gonna try and pair up ANY pikes, rule of thumb is ALWAYS get three or more if possible. Bare minimum. If you only get two, your chances are 50/50...and then gettin a pair that actually pairs up and is compatible is rough as well. So, three is the minimum, with more being much much better. The more you have, the more chances there are that you may get at least one of each gender...;) Idealy, you would want one male and three or four females. Only down side would be that they would have to be large so you could sex them, and thus cost more. Don't be discouraged though if you don't getta pair though. Pikes are picky, and can be rather difficult when it comes to pairin them up. Mated pairs are a blessing when you actually get them.
