I tried searching this but there was way too many threads that didn't pertain.

I know every fish's temperament is different but for the general consensus... would a larger male than female be a better approach or larger female than male?

Considering juvenile age as all will be far from adult age/size.

Thanks in advance!

For breeding, a larger female is better. As Pete said, it doesn't matter with juveniles as the females will outgrow the males and be bigger at maturity.

Males can be pretty rough when breeding so a larger female can deal with the aggression better.

So there is no aggression between the sex during juvi ages? Is there such thing as adolescence with rays? LoL

wondering if some small females (~4") would be ok with a male that is about 7", also if that same male would be ok with a 12" female.

Thanks for all the replies!

I think the smaller females should be fine with him. Just make sure they are eating well because he is an aggressive eater and may outcompete them for food. The 12 incher (if I know which one) is a good eater and should be fine, as well.

no need to set up another tank if you dont get motoro as they seam to be the most aggressive at breeding time

once they have bred once the male seams to havlearned the tricks of the trade on how to get under the female so the bites are much less

when my rays breed now they never have a mark on them and the first you know they have bred is when the female starts to get fat

problems only start when you have a mature male and the females not ready

its best to get 2 females first them a male 6 months later this will give the females time to get some size and the combo of 2 females to 1 male speads aggression much better

Males mature a lot faster than females
Even a 6 month younger male may mature faster than a female

I would def get 2 females first if it's motoro then wait 6 months and then get a snake male
