So my grammode is slowwwwwwwwwly developing... These are the best pics I have yet. I am thinking its a male. Hard to see in the pics but the red spots go until just under the black stripe. Here are some progress pictures. First one is from about 3 months or so ago. last two pictures were taken tonight. Any other opinions that would suggest otherwise? I hope not! :)

yeah that dose look like a male! nice little fish but you wont really be sure until its bigger, they are pretty tricky fish to sex, anyways got anymore pics?

It is very hard to distinguish when young, and without other grammodes around. A sub-dominant male will often mimic females. And color patterns vary greatly from individual to individual.
I find the head profile is the best indicator, a dominent male profile is not an even slope, and his lower jaw is thicker than a female.
Male

Female, note the even slope

Male, note the slight hump and slight dip above the eye

Female

That's awesome. How are the personalities? I will probably have to wait another 6 months before mine developes those types of characteristics.. lol. What are you feeding yours? Mine gets a mix of nls, hikari bio gold, omega one pellets, freeze dried krill, and frozen blood worms

Check my pair out.. There is a distinct difference as duanes stated the head profile is a good indicator. In addition the anal and dorsal fin rays are extended on the male. The male is 5-6" and the females is about 3.5 ".

Once my male hit 5", he killed everything else in the tank, except the female, overnight.
They were both very skittish, and secretive except when guarding fry and became fearless.

The foods you provide sound perfect.
Mine lived together relatively peacefully, and spawned 3Xs before the male killed the female.

i got one about 6" the size of his head is ridiculos i will try to grab a pic of him he lives in my indoor pond and is hard to get good pics of them
