hi guys, (pardon my typing grammar, but i'm too lazy to hit upper case letters right now)...
i adopted a mating pair of green terrors from a friend, they're alone in a 30 gal tank (planning to upgrade when they grow, they're only about 3 and 4 inches)...
they're very skiddish and extremely finicky eaters, and the female seems to be doing better with food than the male...
the male has had an open sore on one of his gill plates since around july, before i even adopted them, and after taking him to a self-proclaimed "fish doctor," we were told it was probably just a bite from a managuense that used to be kept with them in a 75... first of all, it doesn't look like it's healed at all, if bitten off, will a gill plate grow back ever?
ANYWAY, the female's doing just fine, but i've noticed the male hiding a lot, and last night when i came home, he was kind of wedged into a plant, so i nudged him to see if he was alright, he's DEFINITELY NOT...
i noticed he has fin rot (on his side fins only), but he's extremely lethargic, almost bellied up when i nudged him, he's just kind of laying around on the floor of the tank and it's obvious it exhausts him to try and swim... the female keeps pushing him about, and i don't know if she's picking on him or trying to encourage her mate to get better...
he also has shallow breathing...
as soon as i saw the problem last night, i immediately grabbed a 3 gallon pot with some clean water, conditioned it, and threw him in there with a strong air bubbler (yes i checked temp and everything)...
i noticed that some nitrite was present in the tank, so i was worried it could be poisoning him, even though the female seems fine, so i did a 50% water change while he was in the pot...
he leveled out and began to swim around a bit in the pot, so after having him in there for an hour i put him back in the clean tank...
i put some maracyn in the water to treat the fin rot and any other bacterial infection he might have, and he actually survived the night after the whole ordeal!
he's still extremely lethargic though, definitely not feeling well, some labored breathing, and i have no friggin clue what the problem might be cause aside from the fin rot i can't see anything wrong with him! his gills might be a bit inflamed, but i can't tell if that's just his coloring or not (either way, maracyn should treat gill disease as well)...
PLEASE HELP! he's soooo beautiful and i can't bear to see him die, does anyone have any insight on this for me???
