So I got a male and female convict on wednesday, female was about 1.5 inch, male about 2 inch. last night she was hanging out around the HOB filter outlet and around top of the heater tube like she was scared this morning she was dead.....Im assuming the male harrased her to death? Is this normal behavior? Im going back tonight I think they had an pink convict female that was larger. There is also a horse faced loach in there but he didnt seem to bother either of them. Did the male kill her? or you think I just got a sick fish? the first night they were eating fine.

It's possible that the male killed her. Though the speed of this killing seems odd. Having said that, most Male convict cichlids will kill thier females if the tank is not big enough, or if there isn't a suitable escape for her. i.e. tank divider, rock work that he is too big to get into etc.

kk, just got back from the store, I bought 2 more females. One is a black about the same size as the male, and the other is a large pink female.....They are in a 20 gallon tank. Not much hiding spots yet. need to get to the store tonight for some cover, just a fake plant in there now. Was going to get a few clay pots from lowes tonight. The big pink one is really aggresive hopefully she will make it. Im planning to keep any female who breeds and feeding the male to my fish as soon as the fish are born. When I need to breed again Ill just go get another male. I assume the female wont leave eggs again if I leave some of the fry in there with her. Is this viable plan?

an remember that convicts are like ppl when it comes to choosing mates. i went threw 2 males before i found a match that my female would take an raise eggs with. you might have a pair that dont like each other or the male wont fertalize the eggs cause he doesnt like the female.

looks like that female didn't like rough sex. on a serious note, add rocky caves so the female will have a place where the male dont see her all the time. by the time the female stabilizes she will be able to handle the males aggressive advances.

Convicts = mini freshwater bunnies

My male has gone through at last 8 different females in his 30 gallon long.

I think the male paired with the pink female. Now both of them are picking on the black female. I came home tonight and the male is really really dark. Until this morning the large pink female defended the smaller black female from the male, now it seems she wants her gone too. the pink female orange spot on her tummy is much darker as well and they are hiding behind the pots. I cant see back there but Im assuming they've paired. If they keep picking on the smaller female thru tonight Ill remove her out of the tank and let my rhom put her out of her misery.

Will the female still eat if shes laid eggs? she darts up from her spot and eats then rushes back to the spot.
