I have read the stickies and what have you, used the seach function lol, and done research outside of mfk before anyone feels the need to jump the gun. Feel free to throw any more links or outside material, I like to make educated decisions.

Anyhow, I am getting a 180 and while I know most likely can't house a male motoro for life, wondering how long I would have to upgrade and as a first ray scobinas price tag aren't worth it imo.
Foot print is 6x2x2, aware 30 inches wide would be more ideal and wider than that even better.
I know everyone quotes minimum tank size and what not, however I'd like personal experience, and therefor get a rough idea. Just as not every person is 6'5", not every ray will be a lunker...just as I have done some stuff outside the text book, sure some of you have as well.

Filtration at least for now would be a 55 sump although might switch that to fx5s for ease of use.
Just looking into it for now, and it wouldn't be soon, as I'd rather research a fish before purchasing. It is very unlikely either way, but if I have longer than I expect, in terms of growth rate, I will seriously consider it.

Also does anyone ever keep rays with semi-planted tanks? I know they need places to swim, just wondering how often they uproot stuff.

female rays are larger than males usually, i keep 3 laticeps in a 180. Bare bottom and a steady wc sched

males grow just as fast but slow down after getting mature. females slow down as well unless they get prego then they seem to put on size fast again in most cases.

I got my male motoro in june at around 4" as a captive breed pup from Vamptrev. Today he is around 10" disk 19" total length with tail. I would say a male motoro could live a happy life in a 180 for in between 1.5 to 2 years judging by how much growth slowed down after 8-9 inches disk.

I feed 2 times per day and do a 50% water change on tuesday and friday of every week. I think my ray may have grown abnormally fast but can't be sure because it is my first :)

Good luck, if you decide to start keeping rays you will not regret it if you do all your research like you are doing.

Cool, good to know, thanks guys. This is the info that I couldn't gather from reading, and thus what I was looking for.

My only problem is I somewhat want to run planted due to the light I got (although will need c02 if so as well since running 2 150mh and 4x54 t5ho), but also am considering rays, thus at a crossroads as a result since that mix won't really work. Everything is still in the planning phase however.

As for plants no chance
If you are worried about size don't get a ray
I noticed that someone mentioned that one of his male motoro was a 10 inch disk and 19 inch with the tail a 10 inch male motoro is still a baby in my eyes

I have kept rays in a 6x2x2 and for most fish this is a large tank but not for rays I have had retic Leo motoro and hystrix all in a 6x2x2 in the past and they all out grew that tank fast

If you are new to rays I wouldn't get one smaller than 6 inch as they are much stronger than the smaller ones

If you get a motoro as retics are also not a good starter ray at 6 inch disk you will be running out of space within 1 year

A 6x2x2 is to small for any ray in my eyes even a female scobina

As you say all rays can get bigger or smaller than stated sizes based on that your only option would be a male true hystrix make sure you confirm it is a hystrix before buying or a male scobina

I had a pair of scobina and the male was fully mature and breeding and would have been fine in a 6x2x2 for life easy but the female who was also breeding and about 4 years old was a good 13 inch disk without the tail I can't confirm the tail length as hers was broken

So I would say apart from a male scobina a 6x2x2 is to small for any ray
